Frankenstein Paradise Lost Question 4

Satan describes this thirst for power and glory and states on 284:262-263 that he does not care where he rules, only that he rules.  In what way is this similar to Victor’s hunger for power?

  1. It is similar to Victor because he started out wanting to become powerful by doing something that no man had ever done before, which was to bring someone back to life. Victor states, "It was the secrets of heaven and earth that I desired to learn;..." (24; ch. 2), and he strives to achieve this. Victor becomes so consumed in his work of creating life that he stops acknowledging the world around him, and stops caring about, not only the people around him, but also himself. He has such a hunger for power that it takes over his life, so that thing only thing he cares about is the glory he would get from doing something that no man has done before. Satan's thirst for power and Victor's hunger for power are similar in the fact that both of them will do whatever it takes to achieve the power.

    1. I would agree with Mikayla because I agree that Victor completely lost himself. His hunger and thrist for power lead him from one bad choice to another, and after awhile he had nothing more left. He lost everything he had in his life just because he wanted to have power and to have done something no one else had done before.

  2. Victor is so driven by the thirst for power that he never takes in to account the down side of this. Victor is trying to play God but God doesn't serve anyone and he doesn't reign in hell. Victor thinks that making life from lifeless matter will bring him a sense of glory (pg 51; para 2). Victor questions what he is doing but he is so overcome with this need for success that he ignores all doubt. Victor doesn't want to serve, he wants to reign. Victor is in a hell that he reigns over because he can never escape his creation. Victor desires glory and this leads to his downfall.

    1. I do believe that Victor is extremely hungry for power and that he never considers what the consequences could be. Victor will never be able to forgive himself for being the cause of the death of his loved ones.

    2. I agree with Tonya because Victor's need for fame and glory is his ultimate downfall. Victor is very much so playing God by attempting to give life back to that which has passed. Similar to Victor, Satan attempts to take the role of God by overthrowing him and reigning in Heaven. God casts Satan into Hell where he is forced to reside. Victor also is cast into the Hell caused by the consequences of his actions.

    3. I agree with Tonya in saying that Victor is trying to play God. Similar to Victor, Satan also tried to play God but was sent to Hell because of it. Thus, as Satan was sent to Hell, Victor was also sent to his personal hell. It could be said that Victor could be a metaphor for Satan throughout the entire story.

  3. Satan and Victor are similar characters in that they both yearn for power. "...Here we may reign secure; and, in my choice, To reign is worth ambition, though in Hell..." (284; 261-262). Satan wants to reign regardless of where it's at. Satan reigns in the worse possible place, but that doesn't matter to him because he is in power. Victor is, in a sense, the same way. "...,but what glory would attend the discovery if I could banish disease from the human frame and render man invulnerable to any but a violent death." (26; ch. 2) Victor is so caught up in finding glory and power that he doesn't stop to think about the consequences of bringing the dead back to life. Both Satan and Victor are also blinded by pride. They have to much pride in themselves to stop, or change what they've done.

    1. I agree with Haley and how she says that Satan wants to reign no matter where its at and Victor doesn't care what he does if its bad or good he just wants to become famous and have whole bunch of recognition for it. She also states that Victor and Satan are similiar, because they both are blinded by the feeling of success and being worshipped for what they have done.

  4. Victor's and Satan's hunger for power are similar. Satan describes his hunger by stating "...to reign is worth ambition, though in hell:..."(284;262) This shows his power because it's saying he doesn't care where he reigns as long as it's something to reign. Victor's is similar because he wants the power of being able to bring people back from the dead. This is similar because he is bringing people back to life in pieces rather than just a whole body. They are similar because they both gain power in way most individuals would try to avoid, but they saw the way to gain power and they took ahold of it.

    1. I would love to examine the motives behind Satan’s fall from heaven. At least from my understanding, though I will admit I do not know much about the subject, Satan wanted power. His hunger was his only reason for wishing to destroy God. Even Victor has a good reason behind his extreme plan. He wishes to save Elizabeth from death. I refuse to believe that Satan simply hungered power. At the root of the issue, there had to be a reason why. Very few villains or psychopaths believe they are in the wrong. Their motives are true, though very biased. At one time, Satan was one of the most well-liked angels. If he had not been, there would have been no conceivable reason other angels would rally behind him. Therefor, Satan and God must have had a dispute over a heated topic, unleashing Satan’s rage. I refuse to believe that anyone or anything is plain evil just for the sake of being so.

  5. Victor created the creature. No, he had no way of knowing it wouldn't turn out exactly how he planned, but his reasoning behind it is significant. He wanted to create the creature and create something magnificent. He knew he would get recognition for it if it turned out successful. However, anybody knows that as great as some things may sound, it could have the potential to go wrong. Victor would have had to have this in mind in the midst of his creation, yet he continued on. This shows that he didn't necessarily care of the outcome (until later when he suffered repercussions) because he was hungry for power; wanting recognition.

    1. I agree with Riley in that Victor was so desperate to achieve recognition/glory/power that he didn't care about any negative consequences. He never stopped to question the morality of his actions, or what possible disasters could occur as a result. He was too concerned with becoming famous by discovering immortality and the reanimation of dead flesh.

    2. I agree with Riley on this one. Victor had no idea that his creation would turn out quite like the way it did. He went into this with an open mind thinking that he was going to create something that would make others praise him for his hard work. He wanted people to recognize him for his creation so he would get all the attention he had always wanted.

  6. In several ways Victor and Satan are much alike. They manipulate and sabotage every good experience in their pursuit of power. Satan wished to overthrow God, while Victor simply played the game of God. Neither had substantial strength or knowledge of what they were truly doing. Blind to what they would lose in partaking in their pursuits, both Satan and Victor condemned themselves to hell. Filled with malice and rage, Satan abandons his fellow angels. Victor does the same to the being he created, his creature. Neither choose to take responsibility for their choices, always blaming another. For Satan, he chooses God to fill his need of vengeance. Victor places all his hatred on the being he created. The egotistical need to rule and have power over others is deeply ingrained in both Victor and Satan. They seek glory and applause from their peers, but dare not be liable to the corruption of their failed plans. Their hunger for power shadows any possibility of either of them being a decent ruler.

    1. I definatly agree with Micaela. She couldn't have said it better. Both Satan and Victor do not really understand what they are doing. Victor did not think through what he was doing with creature. He was living in the moment and loving every moment of his new invention. I can agree with Micaela when she says that niether Satan or Victor take responsibility for their actions.

      Delete
    2. I like how Micaela worded her post. Victor hungers power over the creature, that's one of the reasons why Victor created the creature. When the creature went out of control Victor was upset because he had no power over the creature. He couldn't stop it from what he was doing to his family and friends. He wanted to be able to protect them from the creature but was only left to see them suffer and die.

    3. Micaela worded it very well. Neither or them understand what is going on or what will happen. People might say ignorance is bliss but i dont think that applies always especially in this case. The ignorance they have is bad because they are not only hurting themselves but many others. They did not think their actions through and that hurt the actions of others, not only did they not think things through but they just left what they started and they did not take responsibility for their actions. He did not have power of the creature like kaitlynn said and he couldnt control what happened. But it is his fault for creating him in the beginning. but in the end he cant save them just watch them suffer.

  7. The way Satan describes his thirst for hunger is similar to Victor. It is very similar because Victor has this great idea to make a human out of dead body parts that would basically be invincible. By making this creature Victor had all of this “power” because he had made something not yet created by mankind. He would finally be famous and get all of this attention from people everywhere he went. Victor’s thirst for power is similar to Satan’s because they both wanted to be famous and in charge of something and it did not matter where the location was as long as they were in charge of something. Satan had all of his power in Hell. He did not care he was in Hell, only that he was in charge.

    1. I agree that Satan and Victor had this thirst to do something new. They were so driven by their cause they went against people that loved them. Victor went against his father’s wishes and pursued this old science. Satan went against God’s reign and rebelled against him. Both ended up with the power which they so craved for. Like you said, Victor had the power to revive dead flesh and Satan had the power to make his own decisions. Satan’s and Victor’s thirsts for power are very similar.

    2. I agree with Mikaela and Madison completely. Satan and Victor do crave that almost famous feel. They want the world to look at them and think they did something absolutely wonderful and almost praise them for it. The power of bringing life back after death would be a very strong attention seeker. They both need that and want it. It's also true that they don't care where the attention is from, they just truly wanted it.

  8. Much like Satan, Victor yearns for power and glory. Satan wishes to rule heaven and overthrow God. Victor, though not wishing to rule, has the desire for greatness through his scientific discoveries.Similarly, Victor and Satan both want the recognition they feel they rightfully deserve. Victor wants the glory of discovering something that the world has never seen, this being the ability to reanimate dead flesh and create a stronger, more durable being. Unlike Satan, however, Victor is ashamed of his failure and attempts to cover up the creation of the creature.

    1. I agree with Logan when he says they both want recognition for what they think they deserve. Victor really wanted to create something that had never been made. AFter the death of his mother and his thinking of making something out of dead tissue I think he was maybe looking forward to being able to bring someone that has passed away back to life.

    2. I agree with this. Although Victor is ashamed of his failure, beforehand, he thought it was the greatest idea ever, and he wanted recognition for it. Despite the fact that he messed up, he still wants to stop the creature instead of giving it what it want because Victor still wants to be in charge; he still wants to be in charge.

    3. If Satan is inherently evil then is Victor evil as well I don’t feel that he is. Victor yearns for power but also wishes to help humanity. Satan does not care about humanity. That is the difference between Satan and Victor

      Delete
    4. In the beginning, Satan just craved love from a father who cast him out. In a way, that makes him similar. Its not that Satan is inherently evil in this story, its that his desire for love pushed him to revenge. In the same way, Victors desire for social recognition pushed him to do something horrendous. I dont comparing a love for humanity is relevant here. Satan has no love for humanity, but clearly neither did Victor. He only had love for his glory, and thats why he created the creature.

  9. In the same way as Satan, Victor has this thirst for power. He wants to become well known and almost in a sense popular. Victor had the power and knowledge to revive dead flesh and make this "superhuman". He did it to prevent illnesses, but he never had to few people would have ever thought about taking pieces of dead humans to make a superior human. Just like Victor had the choice to make this human Satan had the power to his own decisions for his power. So the two are very alike and they want to be known even if it is for bad reasons.

  10. Victor and Satan are very similar in their thirsts for power and glory. Victor’s greed began when he was dissatisfied with the idea of death. He immersed himself in the idea of immortal life, and presumptuously thought he would be the one to discover the means to make it possible. Essentially, Victor tried to play God. This is what Satan did when he rallied support from fellow angels and turned them against God. He thought he would be a better ruler than God himself. Victor and Satan both imagined they would achieve glorious results. Thus, neither of them fully considered the repercussions of their actions before committing them. They blindly charged forward with their plans, lost in their greed. Their ends were achieved; Satan and his followers split from God and heaven, and Victor was able to reanimate dead flesh. However, both parties were met with terrible consequences they didn’t foresee. Such is the case when a thirst for power and glory is the motivation for an act.

  11. Satan and Victor are extremely similar in the way they think about power. Satan has this extreme thirst and need to control in his ways at all times. Victor is similar in this because of the situation he has put himself into with the creature. He was so involved and deep into his studies that he has to make this creature that would be perfect in all ways. This creature would be powerful and strong and invincible in a way. This was Victors goal, and it made him want the need for power even more. He wants to be able to be looked at as a god, because he could bring bodies back to life after death. This is a strange concept for someone to think they could accomplish. Just like Satan, Victor felt he had the potential to have this sort of power.

  12. Victor has no interest in ruling he only wants to become a famed scientist. The creature was supposed to be his greatest creation but ended up being his greatest downfall.Victor has a thirst for knowledge that can only be sated through his study of the reanimation of flesh. His interest in the reanimation of flesh is brought on by the death of his mother. His failure causes everyone he has ever loved to die.

  14. Victors desire for power resembles Satan's by the simple facts of how they attain power. Satan is cast out from heaven because of his rebellion towards his father. He breaks the social norms of the angels around him and thus finds himself in hell. The decision to break the social norm, will affect Satan for the rest of his life. It makes him crave love from God, while hating him at the same time. The power to reign is desired by him simply so he can cast God out and in a way, achieve Gods recognition again.

Now, Victor Frankenstein has repeated the same idea. In the world of science, the idea of immortality is not forbidden, but the reanimation of dead tissue would be considered Victor's 'breaking of social norms'. He practically drives himself insane with the idea. With the norms now broken, one sees Victors fall. He creates a monster, who will create Victor’s own personal hell by killing the ones he loves. Victor had first started creating this monster simply because he wanted scientific recognition. Even though both Satan and Victor began to desire power during different periods of their trials, both went about it in unethical ways, showing they would do anything to achieve this power. That is what makes them similar

  16. Both satan and Victor are hungry for power. Neither satan or Victor care for how they get their power. Satan is willing to live in eternal torment so he can rule in hell. This shows his thirst for power. Victor is the same in this regard. He wants power, by the means of science, and is willing to whatever it takes. That is why Victor reanimates dead flesh. He does not care about the consequences but only the power that will come with it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Victor is simply looking for scientific glory, so much so that he didn't think of the repercussions his experiment. He was so blinded by his thirst for scientific recognition, he didn't take in account for the moral dilemmas creating life could bring, and furthermore, what a giant being like the creature could be capable of. He didn't even go far enough to decide how to take care of it. Satan similarly assaulted Heaven against the will of God and the moral guidelines he was to follow.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Both Victor and the Devil are willing to go to extremes and endure enormous hardships in order to achieve "power." The power the Devil hopes to achieve is ruling, whether it be in Heaven or Hell. Victor hopes to achieve power in the form of a scientific breakthrough. The Devil tries to overthrow God in order to achieve this. When that fails and he is cast into Hell and eternal torment he is still okay with this because it means he is in power. While Victor's case is not as extreme as this, it is still extreme by normal standards. He totally shuts down all outward human interaction and communication and replaces it with his quest to make dead flesh living. He is so drunk by his passion that he can not see the consequences that are to come.

  19. Victor's hunger for power was very similar to Satan's in Paradise Lost. He only wanted to know that he could do something, without thinking through the consequences. "I had desired it with an ardour that far exceeded moderation; but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart." (48; ch. 5) He wanted recognition and glory, no matter how strange and unnatural his achievement was. Victor's thirst for power was very similar to Satan's because he cared only that he conquered death and created life.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Victor's and Satan's desires for power manifest themselves in much of the same way. Victor and Satan both wanted to "play God", so to speak. Victor desired the power to give life, a power normally reserved for God Himself. Satan desired to usurp God's rule, also challenging His authority. Both Victor and Satan pursued power recklessly, with no regard for the consequences it might bring. Because of their disregard for consequences, both characters brought about their own downfall. Victor lost all the people who were dear to him and Satan was expelled from Heaven.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Victor wants all of the glory to be to him. He isn't concerned with the way it will effect the other characters. Satan is selfish and so is Victor. I find it interesting that in the book, Victor is compared to God and the creature is compared to a fallen angel, but in these questions, we are finding many similarities between Victor and Satan.

  22. Both Satan and Victor strive for power, be it ruling Hell or playing God. Satan states that he does not care where he rules, only that he does rule. This is similar to Victor in that he(Victor) does not care what he does to make advances in science, only that he does make advances. The similarities between the two show that Satan and Victor want power at any cost, even if they do not what the price of power is.
